Andropause occurs when a man's body begins to produce less testosterone around the age of 40, and therefore testosterone levels decline.
At the same time another hormone called Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) increases.
SHBG binds to available testosterone circulating in the blood.
Testosterone that is not bound to the hormone SHBG is called bioavailable testosterone, which means that it is available for use in the body, fulfilling a beneficial task for the body.
In those men who experience symptoms associated with andropause, the amounts of bioavailable testosterone in the blood have been reduced.
For this reason, the body tissues that are stimulated by testosterone receive less of it, which can cause physical, mental and emotional changes, such as mood swings or tiredness.
Although all men experience a drop in bioavailable testosterone levels, in some it is more pronounced, causing andropausal symptoms.
It is estimated that about 50 million men in the US suffer from some type of deficiency of this hormone.
The changes that occur occur gradually, unlike menopause in women where they occur abruptly.
These changes can cause andropausal symptoms such as:

• Reduced physical agility.
